Bentley to go “extreme” with new Continental Supersports

Bentley has been working on a more hardcore version of the Continental GT. The new Continental Supersports is likely to be powered by a pure V8 engine and will be lighter than the standard model. A recent Autocar report has confirmed some of the details that we had reported earlier.

The new Continental Supersports is said to be the first among a new line of “extreme” performance cars. It will be powered by the same 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine as the Continental GT Speed. However, it won’t have the 185 hp plug-in hybrid system. Instead, Bentley is said to have boosted the performance of the internal combustion engine from 584 hp to 631 hp.

While 631 hp is still less than the previous-gen Supersports with the W12 engine, the new model will be much lighter. Reports suggest that the car will weigh around 2000 kg, which is almost half a tonne less than the standard GT Speed.

The Supersports is likely to feature a carbon fibre roof and other body panels to save weight. It will come with lightweight sports seats in the front but no rear seats. The car will also be fitted with lightweight wheels with carbon ceramic brakes and an Akrapovic exhaust system.

The Bentley Continental Supersports will be offered in limited numbers and is estimated to cost around $540,000.
