2025 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro: Excessively Capable… and Expensive

Earlier today, our man Will told you about the new Trailhunter version of the 4Runner. Well, I am here to show you the one with the TRD Pro badges. This is the one packing adjustable Fox Shocks, beefy all-terrain tires, an electronic rear locker, and extra lights for when you want to run at night. It also packs on one heck of a starting price tag.

Like the Trailhunter, the 4Runner TRD Pro is a hybrid-powered go-anywhere beast of a rig. While the Trailhunter is about taking things easy and enjoying the adventure, the TRD Pro wants you to pick the speed up and beat the trail into submission. And it’s easy to do, as the truck is supremely capable. There’s great power on tap from the powetrain setup, the ride on and off-road feels great, and the various drive modes all you to fine-tune the action so it better relates to the conditions in which you’re wheeling.

But is it worth the cost of entry? That’s a tough sell these days when it leaves you in spitting distance of the Lexus GX550. I think the Lexus looks better. It’s more comfortable, has a better powertrain, and is just as much of a mountain goat as the 4Runner.

This new 4Runner is pretty good. But Toyota and Lexus now have a lineup full of adventure-ready rides all bumping into each other on the pricing ladder. It looks more like an emotional play based on how you feel about a given model versus which one actually delivers the most bang for your buck. I know I’d go with the GX, were I in the market for a new off-road ready vehicle. But I can’t fault those of you who love all things 4Runner.
